If you are applying for a New Brunswick Birth Certificate to support a separate application such as for a Passport, Driver's Licence, Immigration, or Native Status, it is important to check with the organization requesting the document to ensure you obtain the correct vital record. Changes cannot be made once an order has been placed.

If no record of the birth is found by the New Brunswick Vital Statistics Agency, fees will be applied to the search cost and will not be refunded by the Agency.

All birth certificates in New Brunswick are mailed or couriered directly from the New Brunswick Vital Statistics Agency.


Who Can Apply for a Birth Certificate?

  • The person who is the subject of the certificate; or
  • The parent of the person who is subject to the certificate if the child is under 19 years of age;
  • A custodial guardian (guardianship papers are required);
  • If the subject is deceased, next of kin may apply.

New Brunswick Family Information Birth Certificate (Long Form)

The Family Information Birth Certificate is the document of choice for children 16 years of age and under, as it is generally required by government agencies, such as Passport Canada, SGI, Aboriginal Affairs. Includes the individual's full name, date of birth, place of birth, sex, registration number, registration date, date issued, PLUS the parents' full names and their province/state and country of birth.

New Brunswick Individual Information Birth Certificate

The Individual Information Birth Certificate contains the individual’s full name, date of birth, place of birth, sex, registration number and registration date, and the date issued. This certificate may not be ideal for children 16 years of age and under, as many government agencies require the additional information contained on the Family Information certificate.
