Required as proof of a legal marriage, to ensure the rights of spouses and children are respected, to apply for certain social benefits, to settle an estate and to change or hyphenate a surname, Nunavut marriage certificates can be ordered by proceeding to step 1 below.
Marriage certificates are only available from the Nunavut Department of Health and Social Services if the marriage occurred in Nunavut on or after April 1, 1999. Please visit the Northwest Territories marriage certificate page to obtain a marriage certificate for marriages that occurred prior to April 1, 1999.

Who Can Apply For a Nunaut Marriage Certificate With This Application?
This site is available for use by the public and legal profession to obtain Nunavut Government approved and official certificates of marriage issued by Nunavut Vital Statistics as an independent authorized agent.
Original or replacement marriage certificates may be released to:
- Either party of the marriage.
Is the Certificate of Marriage Required to Apply for a Divorce?
Yes, you must have an original government issued Certificate of Marriage or Certified Copy of the Registration of Marriage to apply for a divorce in Canada. If you require a low-cost divorce service, we recommend www.untietheknot.ca
Fees & Processing Times
All Nunavut vital certificates are $60.00 each and include all taxes, search, shipping and processing charges. Average delivery time for regular service is 3 to 4 weeks.
Payment can be made by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, cheque or money order – Please make cheque or money order payable to “ExpressLegal”.
If no record of the marriage is found by Nunavut Vital Statistics, fees will be applied to the search cost and will not be refunded.
Nunavut Certificates of Marriage
Small Marriage Certificate (Wallet Size): Contains the names of the parties to the marriage, date and place of marriage, date of registration and registration number.
Large Marriage Certificate (Paper Size): Contains the names of the parties to the marriage, date and place of marriage, date of registration, registration number and place of birth for both parties.
Restricted Photocopy of Marriage Registration: Contains all the information that appears on the original registration. A restricted photocopy is a copy of the original registration and is usually required for legal purposes. They are, by law, for restricted use only. A restricted photocopy can only be issued if authorized by the Registrar General of Vital Statistics or on the order of a court.
