Who Can Apply For an Ontario Marriage Certificate With This Application?

This site is available for use by the legal profession and general public to obtain Ontario Government approved and official certificates of birth issued by the government agency as an independent authorized agent.

Marriage certificates in Ontario may be released to:

  • Either party to the marriage;
  • Child of the marriage;
  • Parent of either party to the marriage;

Certified Copies of Marriage Registration in Ontario may be released to:

  • Either party to the marriage; or

Is the Certificate of Marriage Required to Apply for a Divorce?

Yes, you must have an original government issued Certificate of Marriage or Certified Copy of the Registration of Marriage to apply for a divorce in Canada. If you require a low-cost divorce service, we recommend www.untietheknot.ca

Fees & Processing Times

Payment can be made by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, cheque or money order – Please make cheque or money order payable to “ExpressLegal”.

Certificates ordered with regular service average 15 to 20 business days to be processed and delivered.

Certificates ordered with rush service average 5 to 7 business days to be processed and delivered. RUSH SERVICE IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR DELIVERY OUTSIDE CANADA.

Search Letters average 6 to 8 weeks to be processed and delivered.

Service times listed are approximations and are not guaranteed. Incomplete or inaccurate applications will significantly delay processing time.

  1. Marriage Certificate – $65.00
  2. Certified Copy of Marriage Registration – $75.00
  3. Rush Service – Reduces processing and delivery time 5 to 7 business day – $35.00 – RUSH SERVICE IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR DELIVERY OUTSIDE CANADA.
  4. Search Letter– $65.00 – ($15 extra for each additional name searched)

Fees include all taxes, search, shipping and processing charges.

If no record of the marriage is found by the Office of the Registrar General, fees will be applied to the search cost and will not be refunded by the Registrar.

All marriage certificates in Ontario are mailed directly from the Office of the Registrar General.

Recent Marriages – A certificate will be issued upon completion of the marriage registration. The registration takes approximately 10 weeks from the date of marriage. Rush service is not available for marriages that took place within the last 10 weeks. Please contact the Registrar’s Office at 1-800-461-2156 if you do require a certificate for a recent marriage on a rush basis.

Marriages Prior to 1991 – Marriage Certificate applications where the marriage took place prior to 1991 normally take longer to process. Rush service is not available.

Marriages Prior to 1965 – Marriages prior to 1965 may not be in electronic format. When applying for a Marriage Certificate for a marriage prior to 1965, it can take up to an extra 6-8 weeks for the registration to be converted into electronic format before processing can be completed. Rush service is not available.

Ontario Certified Copy of Marriage Registration

This document contains all registered information, including signatures. It is a certified copy of the original marriage registration.

Search Letter

A search letter states that according to the Ontario Vital Statistics office the marriage is or is not recorded. If you are getting married outside of Ontario you may need to prove that you are not currently married and may be required to apply for a marriage search letter. In many jurisdictions, this letter is commonly referred to as a Letter of Non-Impediment. This letter only confirms whether or not a marriage is registered for you in Ontario.
